Use a rule of thumb guide which is :

Is it likely that such a player would join the club?

If not, then don't sign him

Without wishing to jump at anyone, the one thing I still cant quite get my head around is why?

Surely a big part of the LLM thing is to achieve success with a squad of players you have picked and nurtured yourself? Taking your unknowns to a 4th round giant killing. Avoiding relegation with the help of a 18 year old Y.A player?

If I wanted a game where I went and signed a truck load of established stars, I would start a game at the top. Does taking over a LL team and just filling your squad with 'known' talent not defeat the object or the challange?

My £80K pw -> Conf quote earlier was an extreme example. What I was trying to get at is at what point would one of those players in last night's Real Madrid team say "oooh, lets go and have a go at Vauxhall Motors"? Even if it was 10 years after their peak, it aint gonna happen. And thats what I was saying about loop holes in the CM game. CM lets it happen, but its nothing more then a loop hole, and to me, if you exploit that you may as well go and use all the other game features that are "off limits".

Mind you saying that, I think this debate needs to clarify its subject. Im personally talking about not signing Spagetti Legs or "Look-Ma-I-Can-Bend-A-Free-Kick-Past-These-Englishers". Im not saying Poor premiership players should be off limits. Nor Im I saying One-cap-Charlton-Left-Backs are unreasonable if they have been out of contract for a while and have been plying their trade at around your level and country before.

Again, and as LFCfan has said, use your own judgement.

Problem is, im not 100% sure everyone is.

Bottom line - 35 year old former Columbian International Golden Boy chosing to end his career in Danish Third Division. No.

Doesnt matter if he will take the £100 a week p/t in the game. It wouldnt happen in real life.

So I say dont sign him. If however you are happy to proceed, as you have said Rekwob, everyone's take on LLM is different.

The MLS(?) isn't LLM. There is quite a lot of money, they have big stadiums and quite a few experienced players (mainly South Americans) play there.

Is the American league called the MLS? I think it is but im not sure.

I wasnt talkinga bout MLS. And no their isnt lots of money, and their is also a salary cap

Very good point.
I'm quite happy that the decisions I have made with regard to my Conf team are still very much in the spirit of LLM, and surely at the end of the day (Brian) thats all that matters?
The only person we should be in the business of keeping happy is ourselves, peer group approval is nice but it's not essential.
I think much of the debate in this thread (one or two idiotic comments aside) has been excellent, this is the reason I'm here.

I very much agree with that, which is actually why I was somewhat offended by your previous clambering the moral high ground statement.

In here you play by the LLM ethos, there are some basic rules, the most important being, as you implied, to let your conscience be your guide.

I realise that you may be referring to my post when you say idiotic comments I, however, still feel it was spot on with regards to what you said, but by now it seems we are on the same page once again, not that that is important.

Lets try and put this in some sort of perspective. I can only speak for the CM3 experience as I wont have a PC that will run CM4 for quite some time.

The likelyhood of these players being willing to sign at conference level is rare (I use the conference as the English Leagues are most commonly played). The number of non British ex-internationals willing to play at this level is practically non-existant.

Not many of these players are around in the first few seasons (certainly not in .68 anyway) Most of us would expect to be out of the conference by then with most teams. When these players become available and willing to sign for our clubs we will find ourselves maybe in the 1st divison, but more likely in the second or third. It is still hard to get these players to sign, mostly because as soon as you start sniffing around them a club with a higher rep comes in, and they want a lot of money.

It is quite easy to sign EPL & Div 1 journeymen.

In my experience, not many "good" players will sign for me when I am in the conference. Some journeymen will sign however. For example, in my current Chester game I signed two Birmingham players on Bosmans at the end of season 1 (one Jamaican international). However, I had been promoted to the football league, no one else came in for them and they have pitifully (IMO) small release clauses. As I see it, they have signed for me so that they could keep themselves in the shop window until a "bigger" club comes along to pinch them.

If I get out of divison 3 this season I do not expect to be signing any major ex-internationals. I have some Bosmans lined up, but none have represented their country above U21 level. I expect to be in Div1 before realistically this happens (a long wait then ). This "realistically" is both in the game and in relation to real life. If I do (God forbid) get sacked and end up back i the conference I would be surprised to be signing any ex internationals.

However, we all accept that IRL this happens on occassions. They are very rarely players from outside of the country concerned (or else they are players who have had a long career in that country). I do not think that should the chance to sign one of the players occur, along accepted LLM guidelines, that we should be shooting ourselves in the foot by deliberately not going for them. However, 6 ex-internationals in a conference starting 11 would definitely be unrealistic.

I would be interested to know if the CM4 experience differs greatly from this.

In the summer at Nuneaton Borough i signed a former Boro striker now retired (the lazy feck), a 35 yr old Moorocan fromer Saints defender (who had been at an unknown club) a 33 yr old former liverpool and blackburn norweigan left back, a rather average ginger scot formerly of Everton... a 33 yr old former Cheslea and Fulham danish midfielder... and a coventry midfielder whos dad was an ex-manager.

Unrealistic, maybe the ginger bloke he moved almost directly from Everton...

Most of these are at the end of their careers TBH, and if they were so good im sure theyd have joined bigger clubs...

Could be argued one of them is a world class player... the rest are just average to good players reaching the end of their careers. The ex-boro striker only cam after a fecking work permit appeal though.... bloody FA
