i thought the processor had more effect than RAM?
| You need decent high B/W ram and a decent processor to get any notable performance boost, for instance my own machine i have.
3.0Ghz Quad Core Extreme
4GB Ram (Minus 800MB) Due to having the Nividia 8800 GTX GFX card, DDR3 high b/w memory all built on an Asus striker extreme mobo.
I can play over 60 leagues in 30 odd nations with a huge db and it still flys. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Dude... How the heck did you get such a beast?
Honestly, must have cost you several thousands of pounds... </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yeah man cost me an arm and a leg but its sure as hell worth it, all i need is another GFX card for Sli then ill be good lol. </BLOCKQUOTE>
o.o mind sendning me the old graphics card? </BLOCKQUOTE>
lol if you want a 256Mb HD Radeon XT you can have it =) </BLOCKQUOTE>
I must either be totally lost on technology, cause last tiem I checked, those sorts of cards were some of the best you could get o.O </BLOCKQUOTE>
It's a good card but i still took a good jump up to the 768MB Nividia card so i noticed a good performance boost with it overclocked and its all watercooled so it doesnt overheat like the previous one did when overclocked.

You have a Celeron 2.2ghz? thats your problem right there. You can pick up a 2.4Ghz Quad core for £160 now, you also have very low ram, these days you need atleast 2GB for things to run smoothly.
| First upgrading to a new CPU will 9 times out of 10 necessitate buying an new motherboard as well (and in the case of the OP it definately would since the Celeron and Quad Core CPU's are totally different socket types). Possibly new RAM and graphics card as well depending on how much backward compatability the new board has and the age of the components you have in your current PC (and in all honesty there's no point buying a near top of the line CPU if the transfer speed of your old RAM will bottleneck the system).
In the end that "only" £160 for a new CPU can easily turn into £600. Or more.
Secondly the ammount of RAM needed is dependant on what operating system you're running:
Vista. Yes 2GB as an absolute minimum (since the op system itself requires something like 1GB to run properly).
XP. You can easilly get away with 1 or 1.5GB for nearly every game or application out there. And there's no point going over 3GB with XP since it has a hard coded limit of being able to use 3.5GB. </BLOCKQUOTE>
xp with 1-1.5gb ram ...you havent played many of the new mmo`s m8 but even for games like fm2008 he is running only 750 and that isnt enough,as I and others have said he would need to either strart from scratch(maybe best tbh) or see what he needs for his gamming needs,I only guess this isnt the only game he plays and if he has that system I dont want to think what card he is using.

| Yeah and soon there will be more with the new Nividia card coming out soon, the fastest processor to date is the 3.0Ghz quad core extreme (the one i have) overcloced to 3.6Ghz, and the new DDR 3 is alot faster than the fastest DDR 2, you can only get 4GB in a 32 bit vista and up to 128GB (I think) in a 64 bit vista.

And to add to that 2 Raptor drives at 10.000RPM in raid 0 go along way in speeding up things to.

.... wow....
It feels like just yesterday I was reading about the fabulous new NVIDA cards running at an amazing 512MB! and the superb DDR 2, an article labled replace your old ram with DDR 2 it's for the future, and the future of cpu's the amazing quad cores, which would be released within the span of 4-5 years. and xp with it's 3GB ram limit (which seemed redundant to me)
Honestly.. How much would it cost to get a decent quad core, decent graphics card (by your standards), 4gb memor and, I'm afraid to ask. But do we have the technology to have terrabytes on one builtin harddrive now?

| This was before i upgraded my mobo and ram: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3686/imagehr2.png
My quad core cost me little over £600, the GFX Card cost me over £500 for each one, the DDR3 memory cost me over £500 for 4GB worth. And yeah you can get 1TB drives for £130 quid now from Misco.

| I've actually got Armed Assault, and various flight sims running well on 1GB with an old P4 2.4GHz CPU and an ATI 9800Pro 128MB GFX card. Runs FM08 perfectly as well (running about 48 leagues from 17 or 18 countries at the moment).
Admittedly ArmA will only run at anything near playable frame rates on low/ very low settings. And you're quite right, I've not played any MMORPG's. They're not my thing really.
But I'll be the first to admit this rig of mine is nearing the end of it's (gaming) days. I'm actually looking for a new rig at the moment.

Heck running 10 leagues at super fast speed would be absolutely awesome |
