I was Birmingham, in a pre-season friendly against hearts. I started with the 4-1-2-1-2. The game was scrappy but i was winning the mid-field battle. When i won the ball i couldn't get the ball behind the hearts defence. I conceded a goal on the stroke of half time. I took Cameron Jerome off after a shocking display and bought on a defender, to now see if that would help defencively. My formation now was a flat 4-5-1. Then i was creating chance after chance after chance and won the game 3-1. How??

I've found that 4-5-1 is the most effective fmt, not sure why - i swiftly abandoned all attempts at a 4-4-2.

I actually find that a 4-4-1-1 system with 2 good wingers with crosses is a very good tactic as well

The main difference i've found, is that with one up front he sits in between the AIs back 2 - hence, due to the defending being awful, they fail to pick him up as often as when there are 2 up front.
If you have an AMC then just set him to run at them, one CB closes the AMC and leaves a hole that your FC can stroll into - all while the other CB sits and watches.

Sorry that's what i meant - its a 4-5-1 but not with flat midfield - it varies from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-1-1 depending on home/away but i think the key feature is only having one FC.

I notice that tactics with 1 FC is better than 2. Tactics like 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 seem to create more chances. I think it is about the midfield battle
