1) Set your number 9 to target man and attacking mentality greater than that of the second striker.

2) Your number 10 should have a side arrow to allow him to create 2 v 1 situations with the winger on the flanks.

3)Passing for both strikers should be set to short.

4)Target man should be set to run forward as often while the second striker should be set to run forward occasionally. This will help the two strikers complement each other in attack.

The inner midfield

1) Your number 8 is the creative force in your team. He will be the one that will split open the opposition defence with his slick passing and mesmerising runs. So whatever you do, make sure that your number 8 posses excellent dribbling, creativity, passing and shooting skills. These are a MUST!!!!

2) Don’t be afraid to play one of your FCs in that position. Sometimes it is hard to find a good AMC to fill this role so check your FCs for these attributes!

3) Your attacking midfielder should be allowed to shoot from distance so don’t restrict his shooting especially if he has a good long shot attribute! Also remember that his primary objective is to provide goal scoring chances for the team so his attacking duties should be much more than his defensive ones. 75% attacking 25% defending translates to about 15 on the attacking slider.

4) Your number 6 should defend a lot more than attack and he his role is to cover for your attacking midfielder. So whatever you do make sure that his attacking/defensive duties are the exact opposite of your number 8, i.e. 25% attacking, 75% defending or 5 on the slider.

5) It is essential that your number 6 dedicates more of his time on defensive duties as he will be the player closest to your defenders to receive balls and spread the play to you wingers or start a counter attack in a more central fashion.

The outside midfield

1) Your number 7 and 11 MUST have good speed and make runs behind the defence.

2) They must have high dribbling and crossing attributes to be successful wingers.

3) Allow your wingers to make forward runs/run with ball often.

4) Allow your wingers more direct passing.

The wingbacks

1) Your number 2 & 3 MUST posses pure speed and an above average passing ability. This is a MUST. If your full backs don’t have these qualities then sell them!

2) They must also have high work rate and stamina.

3) Their marking should be sound and have a good crossing ability

4) Don’t restrict the passing of your full backs. Allow them mixed passing![/LIST] The inner defence

1) Your number 4 must be able to defend 1v1 situations and have very high heading ability. If you can find a centre back who can play with both feet then you’re on to a winner! This is important as he is playing in the centre of the field!
*] 2) Your number 5 MUST have strong passing skills and be able to communicate well. He id the one leading your defence!!! And don’t forget tacking. He is the last line of defence before your keeper!

Ever since I follows these basic rules in my 4-4-2 I have had much better success wit my Betis team. After 2 moderately average seasons (finishing 4th twice and winning 1 Spanish cup) I am currently in 1st place and 7 points ahead of the likes of Valencia, Villarreal, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Tried it out, worked ok. kept giving the ball away so not sure about big difference in mentalities. I think closer mentalities between the mid. players works better. att together def together.
What i did like was the way the strikers worked, esp. the arrow pointing towards the wing. play as l'pool bellamy is excellent in this role.
