This is one aspect of the game which I never could quite understand. What exactly determines the value of a player?? For example, I'm in the process of trying to buy Gareth Bale, value 4.9 mil. A few other teams had bid too, around the 10 - 12 mil range so I would assume this is the going price (for a 4.9 mil rated defender). I bid in that range. Tottenham come back at me saying they will settle for 23.3 mil for him which made my eyes jump out of my head. How on earth does a team value a player at 4.9mil but will sell him for 23.3?? I know there is perceived valued and potential... but shouldn't all these figure into the value of a player? If a player is valued at 4.9 then 4.9 mil is all it should take to buy him, no?
Not really. It'd make the game pretty boring if a player was valued at 10M and you just offered the money and they accepted. No use of bargaining and trying to get the best price possible etc. The value that you see on the screen is in a way, the market value of the player. The value that you eventually buy him for is what the players club values him at. Now, that value depends on how the club sees the player really. Whether he's indispensable to the club, whether they think he'll become a star player in the future (for Bale I think it'll be a combination of both) etc etc. What will further increase the price you pay for a player is if you're a rival. So if a player is valued at 10M by his club, and if you're a rival (say you're playing as Arsenal and Bale is still at Spurs), then obviously they'll not want to sell their player at a good price to their fierciest rival. They'll double their asking price for other clubs for you in that case.
It pretty much conforms to real life. Take Berbatov for example. He's valued in the market at about 15-17M. A club would be willing to pay that price for him and be happy with it. But Tottenham have slapped a 30M price-tag on him. If someone wants him they'll have to try to negotiate but you can bet that nobody will get him for less than 20-25M. Because he's a key player for them you have to part with a lot more to land him.
Surely the team that owns the player decide how important that person is to them. In this instance tottenham don't want to sell bale, so if you want him then you will have to pay over the odds.
But a 4.5m player who isn't in the team or regarded as a prospect may go for a lot less.
I think its the importance to the club that determines the players value, more than the stats and estimated value of him.
