anyone read gary nelsons books?, he mentions about not being able to offer a player less than his last contract when re-negotiating terms (not when changing clubs) any one here heard of that rule and y it isnt implemented? cernanly solve the cheating that goes on involving keep offering players lower deals in order to cut the wage budget

Why is renegotiating contracts cheating? Happens all the time these days with clubs offering players less base wage (with a higher bonus) and anyone that doesn't want to accept it can leave the club.

mabey its wrong but its in his book, and he`s now igh up in the pfa, and was a pfa representative. when a club goes bankrupt they can put it to all the player to take a deferment in wages, but its up to the players whether they accept it or not, alsoit can be written into a contract at the start that if the club is relegated u take a drop in wages. as for the cheating aspect its well know that at the mo players are too willing to take a pay cut and so you can easerly cut the wage bill

His book was written before a lot of rule changes in the game IIRC, also I believe that what you're referring to involves players being kept on at the end of their contracts, pre-bosman.
Employees at any company can be offered a contract below their current wages, accepting it is, of course, down to the employee in question. Give me a title (there were two books, although I guess it's the second) and a page number and I'll read it in context.

Since the demise of the big TV deals there must be literally hundreds of players who have had to take a pay cut. Clubs just can't afford to keep on the £20k+ p/w players and at the end of their contracts they either drop their expectations or go.
My own Team, Hearts, lost an entire first Team of players over the past three seasons and are having to let a good many others go this season as well.
It's not cheating to renegotiate a contract. It's commonsense on both sides.

It is indeed really common for clubs to have their players sign lower contracts, even when their contract is not even ending.
But indeed this usually happens at clubs that are having financial trouble, and I can assure you, lots of clubs are in that position. THis year only, both relegation spots in the first class are taken by teams who didn't get a licence to play there next season. Last year it was the same. I'm pretty sure players want to re-sign a new reduced contract if that increases the clubs' future.
I also think that in Holland, a pretty famous club (Vitesse Arnhem) offered lower contracts to their players, but I don't think lots of them accepted.

I'm not sure if it is illegal. I know it is illegal to impose a wage cut. Players are within their rights to refuse new contracts if they don't agree with the terms.
