SI has done a far bit in relation to board interaction for FM08 and arguable in relation to fan interaction. But i think you should be able to interact more with staff. Right now, you get a coach's report that is only really useful for an indication of potential ability because everything else in the report, you can pretty much determine for yourself. The reports you can give from the assistance really doesn't tell you anything that isn't pretty obvious.
It'd be great to have a director of football or your assistant giving you more information in relation to tactics. I'm not talking about cheating and tell you how to beat the AI, but rather just suggestions, maybe about training a player for a new position where they attributes are more effectively used, maybe give you a clue as to why your tactic is having trouble breaking down highly defensive opponents, maybe in relation to particular players not working well together on the pitch even if they have great ability (e.g Lampard and Gerrard in real life although I haven't seen this in the game). It seems realistic to have someone you can bounce ideas off in relation to tactics and not to be completely alone in figuring out why certain things keep going wrong. And they don't always have to be right in relation to their advice.
One other thing I'd love to have fixed is the man marking system. I hate it when I assign someone to be man marked and the AI shifts the players positions around which can result in my DM not marking the AM but the ML for instance. You see your player completely out of position but you might not be able to do anything until a goal has been scored. I reckon there should be a man marking setting and a position marking setting so the AI can't exploit this.
What you are describing (the tactical help, help with individual training, idea-bouncing et al) is not a director of football, it's an assistant manager. Apart from that, it's a good idea
The director of football would be more involved in managing the budgets, overseeing scouts and the academy and acting as a buffer between the manager and the clueless board.
The director of football is quite a controversial role, at least in England, seen as the main reason for Harry Redknapp leaving Portsmouth. The appointment of Damien Commolli as Sporting Director (something similar to director of football) is also widely seen as what eventually drove Martin Jol out of Spurs.
That is more what a director of football should be like in the game, in my opinion.
