No success here either - does the skin xml need any adjustments making to allow for it?

You should be able to do it the same way you would add a picture to a player. I checked after the fix went in and it worked.

I may have been buggering about with the xml before the patch...

I'm finding that on the refs page with some skins I get the Name, Date of Birth text - on others I get the list of what their name, d.o.b. etc actually are... On none do I get their photo!

Sounds like you might have been messing around with the 'with photo' part of the xml file

there is a problem after 602 patch!

no naionalities, no ages....in info panel of referee.
only refs with foto have all info
