Apologies to Taipan, but I liked his phrase.

Anyway, this is for all those managers who like to change jobs every few years. I've played the game this way ever since I've started, with my longest stint being some 10 years and the time at a club averaging probably some 3-4 years. I generally leave when I feel like I've taken it as far as I can go or when something else takes my fancy.

However, lately it's occurred to me that I've been missing something. Most of the time I leave when the team I've built up is just past its peak or they have had a poor season. As a result I don't think I have ever rebuilt a side after their performance has dropped.

What do you think? Am I avoiding one of the challenges by not facing up to my team's failings, and is this one of the essential bits of the game?

This is actually pertinent now with my Monaco side in '29. We've done particularly well over the past two seasons but are only about 9th at Christmas now, with neither offence nor defence performing up to scratch. Already I've started looking around for new challenges, but I suspect I should just take a step back and sink or swim with the rest of the squad.

It's been a while since I had a long play game, but I always set myself a goal when I took over a club. It might take me longer than I want, or too quikcly for my liking but a goal always gives me a door to go through with no guilty feelings.

I think you may be right - not about the one step higher, because that's not possible, but about the ambition to get past the bad seasons. I'll just have to resist the urge to look for greener pastures this time around.

The problem is I've met the goal (consecutive domestic and European doubles), but when the team stops performing as well I look to move too easily.

Although my record at domestic French cups is atrocious (1 in some 30 attempts), so that's something to aim for.

It's hard sometimes especially if you can see a youngester you have developed is just about to hit the big time, but once I achieved the goal I set, it's jump island time the very next season for me.

No ifs, buts or maybes.
