To view any downloaded or self created content or skin changes then you will have to ensure that Skin Cache is switched OFF in the game preferences.

You'll need to either restart the game or reload your skin to see the changes after you have done that.

Please refer to this SIbase document covering the skin caching and impacts this has on content creators.

Edit by Boah 11/10/05: Changed the title.

Is there any chance of SI having an official downloads section for grapics (badges/logo's/kits etc..), otherwise I'll end up with different kits (some with/out shorts) different looking badges, it done my head in for months. I'll pay???

No chance at all, I'd say. The whole reason you have to find kits made by independent third parties is that SI can't get permission, or perhaps justify the cost of permission, to distribute those kits. Likewise for club and competition logos. If they were able to distribute them at all, for example through an official download site, I'm 100% sure they'd make our lives easy by including them with the game (as they do with the ones they do have licensed).

If you pay for the licenses then we'll be only too happy to do graphics for download

Seriously though, it's not going to happen.

For content creators/authors there is a way around this. Basically, drop a dummy/empty file in <FM06 install folder>/data/cache/ called "clean." (no file extension) or "clean.txt", and sthe skin system will clean all the cache files, which in turns forces a rebuild of the cache files. The file will be removed in the process, so it doesn't happen every time

So basically someone releasing a skin could use an installer or just simply have a zip file with a valid FM06 folder structure so that in the zip file there is a "data/cache/clean" file, thereby installing the skin will automatically make the game refresh the cache without the user having to do anything.

Obviously while you are creating your skin you should turn off the skin cache altogether, this is just to make it easier/automatic for end-users.

It's all good and well having an installer but that leaves mac users high and dry (unless you release two versions of things). Adding the whole directory structure will surely confuse users as to what is going on too after being used to the alst system.

I guess you could explain this in a 'read-me' file, although you could also include 'Make sure use skin cache is unchecked' in big capital letters at the top.

How come the skin cache option has been introduced? Does it speed things up that much?

Think its about time to be considering making installing skins easier. A packager and dedicated file format for makers and an installer for end users.

what is the point of having skin cache when it is not friendly to self-created,unofficial skin makers,i do understand the majority of the people who buy fm2006 will not go online download skins etc ,but alot of people do,and i still think it should be made so it does work with it,just awkward beacuse i use alot of skins ceated by other people, and it would be great to use the skin cache becasue my computer isnt top spec and it would speed things up,just wish it would be freindly for others
