Ok, I've read through the various topics on re-ranking and how to combat it, but I still seem to have a problem with a long-term slump at some point in my season.
I'm into my 5th season with Watford in 2013, we are in the championship. The last four seasons we have finished 15th, 8th, 7th, and 8th. In each season (minus the first in which I took over the team mid-season) we started strong, hanging around the top 6, then went on 10-12 game winless runs, re-found our form for the last month or so and finished a few points off the playoffs.
This season we started very well, and are in 2nd position at the start of November. However, we have gone DLLL in our last four games, 2 home, 2 away, two to lesser opposition, two to stronger opposition.
I figured that I needed to re-examine my tactics, but it seems to be the wrong way around. I have been successful early playing a flat 4-4-2 slow, short, defensive tactic against all teams. Slump started, I figured I should push up a bit and attack, and went quicker and more direct. No luck. Against the weaker teams, I widened up even more, push the d-line up, but I was still unable to break down the massed defense.
So, I am stuck again and my dip in form threatens to put me too deep in it to compete for promotion. I feel like it is something stupid I'm not recognizing that is causing it and would love some feedback from others who experience this.
