has anyone been successful with Pompey. can't seem to make any systems work with them. Just wondering what tactics/instructions people are using with them.

Use the Portsmouth thread in the good players and team thread, but to answer you're question I'm currently playing a 4222 formation with direct passing and quick tempo, hard tackling and deep defensive line and it seems to produce decent results
