How many stars should a future star have when he is 16-17?
I scout players of that age by my scouts that have 20 for Judging PA, and I have not seen any regen with more then 3 stars yet. Am I being unlucky or is this normal and you can develop 3 star 16 year old player into a star?
Three stars is "just good enough" for the stature of your club (and the goals of it), as far as I can tell, so that's not too bad.
Where are you scouting and what database are you using? E.g. in Greece with medium database I only find about one 4-star player per year for my Panathinaikos club. As if this weren't enough, it's usually a player who was pointed to the scouts by ME (I usually see the player when they play against my U21 team), and not someone who they found themselves...
But my scouts do find a lot of talent in Brazil (league running) etc.
Anyway, keep in mind that the stars may well be inaccurate.
I am playing England. I am using Large database. I have about 10 leagues(probably 5 playable).
Here is a question though... If stars are inaccurate, what is the point of them? I am looking for players with PA to be like Messi, Henry, Ronaldo, etc. So even if the report tells me that player has the potential to be better then A, and A has 4 stars, yes, he can be better, but I am not looking for just a little better. And that was the question, how do you find potential stars.
I also niticed that above PA and CA somtimes you see white stars. Do they mean anything?
I always thought that 4 stars means that the player is of equivalent talent as the best player in the same position already on your team. So lets say if you scouted a right winger and you already have Messi in your team and the scout comes back at you with a rating of 4 stars, then you should be very happy as he's just found you the next Messi. It would be almost impossible for your scouts to find a player with 5 stars in this case as Messi is incredibly talented.
Basten: White stars means for youth players how they compare to the other youth squad, this will only show for CA.
If your looking for players like Messi and such, to find potential stars, simply search what I suggested. Unless your team is full of Messis, you'll notice a lot of 5+ stars showing up. If you don't simply find any 5+ stars, or you have a player like Messi for that position, just sort by that position only and sort by PA... the best will be on top, and chances are you won't find much better.
Scout them several times and hopefully your scout will say "Player has the potential to be better than Messi" or equal, or doesn't have that potential. Thats about all you can do. Other than that, look at the mental stats and physical stats - they are your biggest indicator of potential from a simple profile view.
All i've said is pretty much common sense, but *shrug*.
deadlydevices: I don't understand what's so special about those clubs you listed above. Do they produce huge talent on a consistent basis in FM08? I looked through a few of them out of curiosity (also with my scouts) but there's really nothing special about the players there.
