In both of my FM07 games (first with Nottingham Forest, then with Bologna) I managed to sign Kaká for free around 2011/12 or so. I also signed a 27-year old Christiano Ronaldo in both of those games for around 30 M Euro.

The key is making a move at the right time. If their team is winning and the star player is doing well, chances are you have to offer all the diamonds in Africa, and even it the offer is accepted, the player might not want to come. If the star player, or his team, is struggling, you might be able to have a much more resonable offer accepted, and the player will gladly take a pay cut if your team is good enough.

We're not talking about Fatty Ronaldo here.

my question is why on earth would you be spending that much money on a player? by the time any team has enough transfer funds to buy someone like Gerrard/C.Ronaldo/Messi there are regen's who are just as good, if not better going for 100th of the price.

Maybe because the money isn't real and we play the game for enjoyment?

Personally I hate regens, as obviously they're not real and I'd rather buy the top players in the world, to see how they perform in my game.

well your gonna have to play regens at some point if you have long term game

unless you freeze star players after every match so they can play at ages of 100 and what not, probably wont work as when your frozen then you die

spent 140 million on fabregas, 80 million on torres, 25 million on a 30 year old pirlo.... all euro but my team is unbeatable at the mo cos of it... ochoa zaccardo agger richards bale pirlo sitting n front of them with gerrard and cesc in midfield, i have giovani dos santos behind torres and luca toni......no width but too strong down the middle to be beaten!

Pretty obvious really - I just don't like doing it. It becomes less and less realistic as the most realistic part of the game for me is the players in it - without that it starts me to lose interest and I rarely go on past around 10 seasons.
