Free Role should be given to player's that you want to roam the pitch and cause the opposition mayhem, I currently play AMR/AML both on free roles but making sure that both my full backs have no forward runs because the players on free roles have total disregard for staying in position.
AMC, Wingers even Strikers can be give FR's, but not a position where you need them to stay in position e.g. DMC else the opposition will easily exploit the gap left.

You are right the answer is "No". This is because My defense never get's pulled out of position making Fwd Runs, I also play with a DMC as extra cover and I'll counter attack away from home if I'm playing a strong side.
And igf you are playing a sweeper you can set him to a free role as well. I don't user a sweeper much, but if i was it the player involved would have to have excellent positioning and anticipation, plus he should be pretty fast, so as not to get caught out of position.
Also I believe some people have had success setting their dmc to a free role, so they can cover all in front of the back four, shouldn't be a problem if their positioning is good
yup.. any player you want to wander around the park really.... anyone who isnt gonna be stuck in their zone..
like people have said.. dmc and sweepers can have free roles aswell.. granted you have to be careful while doing this and makes ure the cover is there..
aml/r work well with free roles too.. providing you have a dmc to track back and the left and right backs are purely defensive
I rarely use this. i think its best for a creative striker or winger cause if you're playing with two MC then you prolly want both of them to stay in pos and defend when out of possesion. you don't want the other going all bezerk in your midfield.
