Always take the promotion. You get more TV money, more end of season prizemoney and the confidence of your club and fans. Then you get the challenge of getting off your behind and making some new signings to keep the team up. I was just promoted and I think I'll struggle with the season ahead but keeping a dud team up is as fun as winning the championship the previous season.

Sometimes, if I'm a club which I don't feel are good enough, I think that i must draw instead of a win - but then I wake up and become gung-ho for the title. Theres too many benefits.

It's best to get promoted I think. If you go straight down again, at least you have made some money on the season (hopefully). You can then afford better players to get you back up again, and then hopefully stay up
Just got promoted myself recently through playoff (my first actually), and never thought the team had a chance to survive which was confirmed by my board. Was lucky to get a free gem, and are now on top of the table
Sometimes you just hit that great form.
Anyway, go for promotion. More TV-money, attendance and usually prize money.
btw: is it normal to get over 100000 in gate receipts in an away league cup game?
Just happened to me when I got seriously beat up away to Sheff. W...

I think the trick when you get promoted ahead of schedule is to focus the next year on consolidating your place in the new division. I tend to be rather heartless with my players upon gaining promotion. I look for the weakest links and try and upgrade them immediately if possible.
I also find in CM4, since the initial release actually, that if I'm managing a Conference side and we dominate, that with the very same team, I am easily a mid-table side in Division 3. Conversely, I've found going from Division 1 to EPL is not the same, the difference is much more pronounced, which seems legitimate.

I got promoted to the Premier with Boston United (the LLM link) by finishing 3rd in Div1 and waltzing through the playoffs easily.
I decided not to make any massive acquisitions as the board spent the TV money on making York Street all seater.
After a promising start, winning 2 of the first 5 games, we then went 23 GAMES WITHOUT WINNING. We were goners.. but we saved ourselves from humiliation by gaining a respectable (even remarkable) home draw against already champions, Manchester United. We ended the season quite strongly, ending up winning 6 games and only being adrift by 10 points. This was an achievement as earlier we were over 20 points behind Bolton (who finished 19th).
There are 2 major plusses, in my opinion about going up and coming down -
1. Money (TV and Gate receipts)
2. Development of younger players

But if you work your way up from LLM to Premier in quite a short space of time i.e. 10 seasons or less then you shouldn't get sacked for finishing bottom of the league. I had it happen to me three or four times, and never been sacked after getting BUFC from Div 3 to Prem.

In real life a good Conference Manager may not be the best EPL Manager.
There are many more problems managing an EPL Team, not least Media pressure, Supporter disillusionment, etc. and a Board may think it's the Managers fault as opposed to the players.
How often have you seen a Team promoted to the EPL and then have their manager sacked and a "name" guy employed instead?
A few. |

Just heard today there was done some research on that topic in Germany. Many teams that's in the relegation zone, sack the manager and hire new ones. They had researched the last 30 years, and in most cases the clubs were better off to stick with their original manager. When changing manager you often get a win in the short-term, but in the long run you often lose out.
