Of course you would never ever deliberately stay down. There's always a chance of doing well and if you're not willing to take it you shouldn't be in this job. It's only using hindsight that you can sometimes determine that maybe promotion hurt the club more than it helped it.

To be fair to the original poster, he wasn't advocating deliberately avoiding promotion, just saying that sometimes perhaps it might have served the clubs interests better in the long term to have stayed down another season and gone up a year later in a potentially stronger situation.
This is a reasonable point, and it something that I have heard RL managers speculate on also (eg would West Brom have been better off with another season in the First Division before promotion to the Premiership where they could then gone in with a stronger squad). I am in the "take what you get, when you get it" camp though. I think the important thing is to continue to plan for the long term, even if it might mean a step back in the short term - I've found that when this situation has arisen I've ended up back in the original division with a much stronger squad than originally and so have been able to bounce back again.

I agree that sometimes it might be better for the club not to get promoted, but for the players themselves, I don't see a problem.
I often feel that finances get all screwed up after getting promoted too early, but the players have benefited. The board sudenly buys new players and raises wages to the higher division's standards and they suffocate themselves.

Promotion does well, and helps in the area of financial gains, which is oh-so important for small clubs.
You must have reaslised that TV revenue draws more money for your team when in the upper divisions. Even though you may have gotten relegated, you'd still get money from the league at the end of the season.
When you're a really young team, the downside would be that you're destined to lose some of them when you go down. Other teams would be looking at the bargain bin and most rightly spot your big red bull's eye. The better players of relegated teams would most likely be snapped up.

Okay I can see what your worried about but ya got to go up. Your players may want modest (yeah right!) increases in salary but that should be more than offset by Gate receipts. Even if you struggle the year after you must take the plunge.
Beside going from the conference to div 3 will open up more players that will come to your club and yes I'm talking freebies cause you never have enough money to actually buy a player .

What? You see that all time time in real life. Teams with (most often) a very young team is getting promoted and relegates the next season. Lots of examples in low divisions in Norway btw.
Then you can start thinking if the team would have been good to stay in their former division one more season, to get more experience.

I agree with Wilko. It's an excuse for teams that are poorly managed financially when they get relegated and go into receivership.

What's worse is when you outshoot them 15-10, and lose 5-0... I can accept being played off the park, but not losing games we should win. |
