The upcoming (October) issue of PC Zone has a six page article about Drunk Gaming.
4 of their members of staff played Midnight Club 2, Counter Strike: Condition Zero, and ISS3 throughout the night as their alcohol intake went from 0 units to 20 units.
I won't go through the mechanics of how their performance was monitored, but the upshot of it all is:
Performance increased, peaking at consumption of 8-10 units , over this level gaming performance tailed off drastically - being almost non exsitant by the time you get to 20 units.
So, next time someone questions DM, you can tell them (almost truthfully) that it has a sound scientific basis.
I can remember a current affairs program on BBC1 about 10/15 years ago discussing this. They got a 'games expert' to play OutRun (the latest thing at the time), and made him drink several pints to see how he did. Not a lot of difference after a few beers from what I remember.
I can also remember going clubbing when I was about 18, and not remembering leaving. Apparantly we went to the kebab shop afterwards, and I proceded to ease my way through 3 or 4 levels of Chase HQ, which to be fair I can never do usually! Fairly worrying really.
Drunk Management comes into its own though. I'm a pretty conservative manager usually to say the least, but after a few beers I become somewhat carefree...and my entire wage and transfer budget can disappear in a flood of crap players.
The worst thing I find when DM'ing is playing unfit players. I forget to check the condition of players before a game then find that all the players are knackered before half time.
I stayed in on Saturday and played my Donny save all day and most of the night. I had a couple of beers and realised that I had none left. I then had 2 bottles of wine.
On sunday I dicovered that I had signed a 33 year old Moroccan winger, formerly of Coventry and Villa and had no idea why! I have a good young winger and didn't need him in the slightest.
I can only play pool after a few under my belt. Sober I just can't get it close. Give me a few beers, and the angle shots just start coming off, and I play like a man possessed.
Like-wise too many beers, and I become double carp.
Tried drunken management a few times, but always seem to forget mountains of little things you have to do with the game. Always seem too keen to get to each match.

Same with me and Darts, optimum at about 3-5 pints, shÃ*t without a drink in me !

Fact is though, the longer you play the game, the better you get at it. The fact that their gaming improved even after units didn't suprise me, it probably takes away some of the tension in the game and helps you play freely too, rather than being carefull. The fact that they were crap when completely lashed didn't suprise me either

You're right on, without a control group that played the same games sober the results are worthless. Or more scientifically: there are serious threats to the internal validity of this "experiment" and thus you can't assume any causality.
