Just started as a LLM with Serie C2 after years with higher divisions, and agree it's the best way to play. Just one quick question. If a formation is listed as a default formation on the screen (CM 01/02) but as a custom formation in the Strategy Guide, is it all right to use? The FAQ guide doesn't make this clear. Thanks.
You can use any of the default tactics when the game is loaded up. The no-no is either (a) going to the tactics forum and stealing their ideas or (b) loading up a tactic from a previous game which you know works.
I'm going to guess that the strategy guide might look at the 4-4-2 variations (attacking, defensive, diamond etc) as being custom 4-4-2 formations.
Dunno, I've never seen (and would question the use of) the strategy/hint books.
Thanks for the input. Am not using editors and have never been to the Tactics Forum. The official Strategy Guide that I have lists 3 custom formations, although the one I'm asking about is listed under default formations when you go to the Tactics screen on the computer. On a different note, I am interested in reading messages from those who've finally switched to CM4 after using CM3 in the past and how it affects, or doesn't, their LLM playing. Have thought about doing the same, but am still holding off.
Smiller, as far as I understand the official guide is not very official. When people complained about its content in the GQ forum(~0 value), members of the SI team were quick to respond along the lines of "well, we are not the ones who write it".
So I GUESS that sometimes somebody pays and gets the stamp of "official". But it is not.

Are LLMs allowed to read the official guide? :confused

Stay away from it. The manual has more information than the guide (information that you need to enjoy the game). Furthermore, the guide includes tips that you don't wanna see (and by that I don't mean that they are any good- but I am sure you are going to hate yourself if you read them).
Tactics are there to be tinkered with. You alter instructions and positions to suit your Team's strengths, and weaknesses.
You don't have to use default formations.
Where the problems arose were with the narrow-formations that exploited a weakness in the AI in earlier versions of CM3, those were supposedly fixed for CM 01/02.
What you don't do is download other guys' tactics, LLaMas devise their own (as I discovered when the Zealots played our online game )
Or you can make up your own, as I have done and Merk has found out. My tactics baffle everyone on the pitch and Merk never has a clue what is going on!
