I don't know about the US Open Cup being irrelevant. It got Rochester some good pub a few years ago for embarrassing a slew of MLS teams. It'd matter more if MLS gave it more attention (like having ALL it's teams enter). But given the fact the League struggles to get it's own piece of the pie here, I can see the catch-22.

if you want a LL club to get your feet wet then you might want to try Hull. they are realitvly good and have money to play with. the best tournies are the League and FA cup, why? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ thats why. i always try to get somewhat deep in those cups so i might get an away game against a premier club and make a couple hundred grand in that game alone.
a few decent cup runs will put you in the black for a season. the vans will pay off in long run, but should only be taken seriously if your in a comfy promotion slot. Promotion is without a doubt the most pressing issue you will undertake, the faster you get into the premier and 1st division, the more money you will make

i was in your shoes when i first got CM. i didnt know a single club from down in the LL, but i wanted to build a winner from scratch. nothing beats the feeling you get when you stick it to a premier club for the first time
