REALISTIC play requires us to go for all silverware, including cups.
LLM that, Liverpoof! :p |

English league structure for our new American buddy.
Premier League - you know about.
Division 1 - Two teams promoted, four teams playoff for a third promotion place. Three teams relegated.
Division 2 - Same as Division 1, except four teams are relegated.
Division 3 - Three teams promoted, four teams playoff for a fourth promotion place. Two relegated.
Conference - Is a national division. Champions promoted with the next four playing off for the second promotion spot. Three teams relegated. These teams are replaced by the winners of the three regional leagues (Northern, Southern & Isthmian Leagues) that feed into the Conference. However, this doesn't happen in CM4 as I had both Aldershot & Canvey Island promoted after my first season, two Isthmian League dwellers (though Aldershot are now in the Conference in real life).
FA Cup - All Conference teams and many non league teams play in the qualifying round. Division 2 & 3 sides enter in the 1st Round. Premier & Division 1 sides enter in the 3rd Round. The 6th Round is also known as the quarter finals.
Despite what Iajafer says, the FA Cup is still considered to be THE domestic knockout competition and can provide a small team with a great deal of money if they get far and draw a big team. A decent run in the FA Cup can mean the difference between being in debt or not.
League Cup - Open to all league teams only. Divisions 1 to 3 play in the 1st Round. Premier League teams enter in Round 2, though those who have qualified for Europe get a bye to Round 3.
Vans Trophy - Open to Divisions 2 and 3 and 16 teams invited from the Conference. Not necessarily the 16 top teams from last season, though I think for ease sake this is the case in CM4. This competition is played regionally, north and south with the winners meeting in the final at Cardiff/Wembley when built. Unless you reach the final, the Vans Trophy brings you very little money.
FA Trophy - Another big knockout competition, this is played by all non league teams (though some non Conference teams don't make it in CM4). Whilst it doesn't bring much money until the later rounds, it is the only cup competition non leagues teams have a chance of winning and has been running nearly as long as the FA Cup, as it was formerly the Amateur Cup.
Hope that helps you out! As for teams, Doncaster or Chester are two of the better choices for someone who is first tasting LLM, as those two are probably the best two in the game in the Conference. For the big challenge, pick Leigh RMI, Northwich, Forest Green or Hereford.

I'm not American, but I do play baseball games...
ootp5.com (Out of the Park). Text management, no graphics or arcade mode.
There are none as complex/polished as CM (ignoring CM4's bugs), but OOTP is as close as it gets. Available by download/e-license, $30 (I think). An earlier version which will give you some idea of the game (though its been developed a lot) is available free from the Home of the Underdogs site. By using a free-database to import players/teams, you can start a career game in any season 1890-odd.
If you can get one cheap, a version of High Heat by 3DO pre-2003 is good on the sim-side with full cool graphics etc as well, but later versions are designed basically for console users and lack depth.
Spent more time playing ootp5 than cm4 in last few months.
