I use Photoshop, but that's far from free. You can download a tryout version from their website though. ( http://www.adobe.com )

Another alternative is Paint Shop Pro and there's a freeware program called The GIMP which I think might do what you are looking for.

I've had the same problems - no matter where I put the picture, I can't get Maarten Stekelenburg's picture to show. Hopefully that advice will work.
