Should it be different for midfielders and defenders, as well?

If your on about the closing down slider, then it is my opinion that your defenders should be set to lower closing down and increase it as you go up the pitch.
Basically, having the slider set all the way to the right is close down in your box. The middle is your own half. All the way to the right is all over the pitch.
So you obviously don't want your defenders closing down people at the half way line as they will get pulled out of position.

So is it wise to inverse your closing down with mentality? i.e. the higher your mentality, the lower your closing down? or mentality should mirror closing down exactly?

As a loose rule of thumb I've started correlating closing down with a players' mentality. I think it ties in with mentality in that the more attacking a players' setting, the more aggressive he plays and therefore would be more suited to high closing down.
I'll probably change my mind sometime soon but it's working damn well for now. |

I've heard ppl suggest the opposite though - that if a player's on attacking mentality, it be better for closing down to be set to Rarely, that way the player'll track back to defend ... applies to outfield players further forward.
Or so I've heard.

Do you mean the player'll stand off if set to "rarely?"

Or at least, doesn't close down high up the pitch and if opponent player beats you then give up and laze around ... that's my intepretation anyway. And i dont really mean stand off, since the option's not available now ... more like closing down deeper?
Is it correct to assume that at some point of time all players regardless of their position will close down their opponent, it's only a matter of how deep before they do so? Or the depth-before-closing-down is dictated more by mentality instead?

| That's how I see it yeah, with the slider dictating where the player will begin to close down the ball, as explained above ("own half," "always" etc). This is why I tend to link mentality to closing down as an attacking player will be more aggressive and effective in attacking the ball, whereas a defensive player would be more inclined to back off and/or not be drawn out of position. That's my opinon anyway.
