The problem is that i think i'm not getting all that i can from him. I set his instruction with short pass, forward runs, long shots (medium), trough balls (high), offensive mentality (15) and high creativity. And i also put him with "free roll".
One thing i wonder, if you put your playmaker with free roll, he will wonder around the pitch, is that a problem? Because i want that he organize all my offensive game plan, so shouldn't he be more "fix" in the pitch?
What kind of instructions you usually use with your playmaker?

Free role can be very effective when applied to a correct player with the right attributes for the job - for example, in 4-2-3-1 the AMC behind the lone striker could be given free role in order to act like a drawn striker doing runs in the box or anywhere in the opposition defence.

Well, the more offensive of the pair (of MC's) could be better choice as a playmaker because he plays deeper and thus has more space plus more options to pass in order to initiate the attacking move, whether it is a short pass to a winger or AMC or killer-ball for the lone striker trying to beat the offside trap. In order to get most out of your playmaker you should instruct him to rarely do forward runs as that way he is more likely to act as an outlet for other players to pass to. Passing should also be set to mixed and he should have some creative freedom, perhaps even much. The mentality shouldn't be too offensive (maybe somewhere around 10-14, at least that's my preference) so he keeps himself available at all times.
That's how I employ my playmaker anyway, although I don't have "Use playmaker" ticked because I have pretty high quality team so I think it is not very good to restrict the playmaking solely to one player. Still, this player makes more passes than others and is the Pirlo-like engine of my midfield. Of course this requires a Gattuso/Makelele-like holding player to bodyguard the creative midfielder.
Have a look in the tactics bible at the top of the page, their is a section in there with loads of information on playmakers and target men that has been contributed to by the regulars.
Personally I play a 4-4-2 with a flat midfield. The wingers are farrowed all the way forward. The right midfielder is set up more defensively and the left midfield is more attacking.
I use my attacking midfielder as a playmaker against teams that have good wingers (from the scout report.
I use my defensive midfielder as a playmaker against strong teams who I am playing defensive counter attack against if I want slow play.
In both these cases I change my instructions from "down both wings" to "mixed".
Their are people who have a target man and play maker set in each block, one in defence one in midfield and one in attack.
Your best bet is to buy one mc or dmc who has the skill, dictates tempo. This will automatically make him a play maker and you wont need to do anything. The best i have found is arouca from fluminense, who is a holding mc that covers the dmc spot
I am agaist putting creative plyaers on short passing (Unless it is a Striker/Forward). I generally want my most creative players to be somewhere in the mixed passing range. I also generally want them to be on at least mixed through balls and crossing (unless they are just bad crossers).
However I rarely use playermakers as I play a fairly quick tempo, counter attacking style and don't want to slow-the-flow.
Playmakers probably work best in a slower build up short passing style.
DMC type of playmaker - Pirlo (direct/mixed passing)
MC type of playmaker - Verón (mixed passing)
AMC type of playmaker [Free Role] - Riquelme (short passing)
I was playing 4-5-1 with Arsenal and Fabregas was awesome in the playmaker role. His instructions were:
mentality, closing down team (c. 10 and 6 home, 8 and 4 away).
fwd runs and ttb mixed
passing 6 home, 8 away
'use playmaker' was ticked and he was the playmaker - av rating was very high and the number of passes, and in particular key passes, was ridiculous - often into triple and double figures respectively.
he was the 'middle' of my three centre mids - at home there were two MCs and one AMC, with him as the offensive MC, and away two MCs and one DMC with him as the defensive MC (other one had an arrow to AMC).
it worked really well.
incidentally, I've now bought some more strikers and am playing 4-4-2 (which overall is better, especially defensively), and Fabregas is playing much worse, whether as playmaker or not (as the more offensive MC).
I have Guardiola, an old Barcelona veteran DMC as my playmaker. He is f'in' amazing at it, sends through balls to my strikers cutting out the entire midfield. Gets plenty of assists I can tell you, plus protects my defence like a trooper. I am in league two though ha ha.
