It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default new to fm ... can't wait to get started..any advice????

hello all . i am about to get my copy of fm08 . Yes i know its late but my wife bought me cm08 for christmas and i have been too busy beating her since hahaha . Anyway my question is this... This , according to this site , seems to be a much more realsitic game but is it easy (ish) to master and also how do the patches work and are they necessary . Yes I know i sound stupid but can't wait to get started . Think i may be Brentford for my sins !!!!

Patches are a must, they always are.

As for is it easy, that depends, some say yes some say no. The best thing to do is to read some of the topics found in the Tatcics Bible thread up top if you get stuck or need advice. If you've played CM or any other version of FM before you should be fine

The 8.0.1 patch will fix many of the bugs reported after the game was released so is best to install before you start.

The best advice is to read the FAQ thread at the top of the forum and also at your lesiure, read some of the threads in the Unofficial Tactics Bible thread at the top.

the game is not exactly perfect but i think its going to be better with the new patch.

its all about formations in fm08 when making tactics. the formation you choose has to be able to make and utilise space as much as possible

good luke mate.

So, you want advice? Ok, here goes:

1. Be careful about who you take advice from. Actually, this is a serious point. It takes some time to determine who actually knows what they are talking about and who doesn't. It took me some time to work it out, but the first person to respond (Cleon) is a good example of someone you can listen to for good advice.

2. Spend time on the forums, but don't get too bogged down with the complications of the engine and the tactics. Just play the game and you'll work much of it out for yourself. But you should feel free to use the forums to discuss your issues freely - and generally people are happy to help [however, I again refer to point 1].

3. Always install the new patches. If you listened to the whingers on here, you'd never upgrade the patch, but I can assure you that there has only been one occassion in all the times I've played the series that upgrading the patch proved worse than the previous version (back in CM days though). The patch that comes out after the January transfer window (including the latest transfers) is usually the best patch so watch out for that and get it as soon as it becomes available.

4. On the forums, make sure you post in the right one for a start (it never bothers me but it is something that annoys the moderators and SI - understandably). But read the forum rules and you'll get the picture.

5. Don't expect the game to be like real life. It's a game, but you are right to think that it is much more realistic (and more difficult) than the other title you mentioned.

6. Enjoy it. I know I do.

I missed out point 7:

7. When you look up and see the clock at 5 a.m. and you know you've to be up for work at 7:30 am .............. relax, you've always got time for just one more game.

dont bother loading the game until the 8.0.2 patch is created tbh...the game is just too buggy and many players have simply stopped playing until the final patch release.

*sigh*

The game is totally playable. Yes there are a few issues, which will be fixed by the next patch hopefully.

It does NOT make the game unplayable. If that was the case, you would have posts only relating to issues, and not the countless threads from people discussing their "playing" of the game quite happily.

It could of course be your tactics though america33428, in which case you've come to the right place... how may we help.
