Yeah that goes back to my "murder" theory. As bell said in my thread, in CM3 they hung around for a season before disappearing. Now they are gone within a couple of weeks.
A problem that hasn't been mentioned is the stadium bug, which is the only gripe I have with LLM in CM4 (still doesn't stop me from playing it tho).
The problem is that no matter what you do, your board will never expand your stadium. If you eventually reach EPL or even the Champ League, it's not that fun to play with a 7000 capacity stadium, with only a few thousand seats

The players in the transfer screen are the most famous players in the game. This is, however, just a small part of all the players in the database. Use your scouts to find less reputable players - also try to loan some youngsters from top clubs
