Nah, you're wrong. Stuttgart lost to Rangers, I think. Didn't see that game though as mentioned above.
I clearly see your point - in Germany those fans vent their feelings quite soon when they feel disrespected, so nobody would dare to field a second class team (if they lose, they'd have to buy a new team bus fur sure).

...and there speaks a true Auld Firm fan
"Field who you want, boys, I'll pay my money and cheer for crap. That guy with the wooden leg's coming back from injury"
*Pssst, Merk. Wanna buy the Scott Monument. I'll give you a good deal and paint it blue* |

Going back to the FA Cup, it's vital for lower league teams. Not only is there the opportunity to get drawn against a big club if they get far enough (and all the glory and gate money that comes with it), there is now also the added bonus of prize money - the qualifying round alone gets you £20,000 if you win - in the current financial climate a good club run can save you from going into debt and even give you money to strengthen your team.
Picture a non league team getting to the 3rd Round and being drawn at Arsenal or manure. With gate money, TV money and prize money, I bet it would be worth around half a million to them. That's not to be sneezed at.

PÃ*sh! How often do you get drawn against ManUre or the Arse? ...and at Old Trafford or Highbury? I've played literally hundreds of Cup ties in CM and can count on one hand how often I've drawn them, or Celtic or Rangers in Scotland, away in the Cups when we need the money.
Cups are the last bastion of hope for the desperate.
Alléz Promotion!!!

Put it another way...
If you have any chance of promotion do you put thoughts of it on the back-burner and risk injuries and fatigue on your best players to beat Mansfield in the Cup in the vain hope you'll draw ManUre a couple of rounds later?
Not me, miladdio!
Rek put it very succinctly in a previous thread. If you're mid-table with no hope of promotion, go for the Cup.

Hehe
There was an April Fool's offer in The Scotsman a few years back where the Scott Monument was put up for sale for £100k. They were inundated with offers.
One woman in the Pub I drank was having a serious discussion about how £100k was reasonable You should have seen her coupon when the Landlord asked her to look at the date |

The Japanese tried to buy several churches and castles in Austria during the 70s and 80s - and disassemble them so they could move it to Japan and rebuild it there.
So why not the Scott Monument too? |

There's the old story about the Arizonians buying London Bridge thinking it was Tower Bridge and shipping it over to the States |
