New FA Cup Record: X has become the youngest player ever in the FA Cup at the age of 15 in Aldershot's recent match (or whatever the wording actually is).
I'll have a look at his stats. These really young players are always good for a laugh. Hang on - AM/F(C) scoring 2 goals every three games. Stats aren't bad either. Better get him scouted.
3 scouts agree that he is an excellent prospect for the future. Perhaps I'll bid then, whilst he's young and cheap.
Current value £50,000 - Min Fee Clause = £250,000.
Save messing around, lets go straight in with £250k bid. Surprise, surprise it's accepted
"Right son, as you're aware we (Chester City) are current Premier League Champions, FA Cup holders and Champions League 1/4 finalists. We're joint top of the league again this season (mid Jan). Aldershot on the other hand are lower mid table in the Conference."
"I'll not bullshÃ*t you, I see you as backup for the first team currently - you'll probably spend a couple of seasons out on loan, but when you're not I'll give you the odd 1st team game and of course you'll benefit from our top of the range training facilities."
"Happy to talk money? Good. Obviously we can offer you considerably more than you're on at the moment, and although this is a long term contract I promise that I'll review it in a couple of years"
Wait a week
News Item: X has rejected the contract offer from Chester City. He has revealed that he would find it difficult to leave Aldershot.
WTF? What is the pimply oiks problem? Worried about moving schools so close to sitting his GSCEs? You're turning down the chance to join the best team in the country (currently)?
Why do my prospects never show me such loyalty when I'm in the lower divisions?
I was going to say this is all fairly plausible, i.e. some players are happy where they are unless you can guarantee them first-team football. But it's definitely true what you say, they never seem to stay loyal to you when you're the small club.
What annoys me most is when they don't even let you offer them terms...seems overly harsh to me.
His Pre-Pubescent girlfriend has supported Aldershot since she was a child (That'll be six months then) and has threatened not to play marbles with him anymore if he leaves.....
Keep him on your Short-List he will probably ditch that girlfriend in a couple of years when he sees how minging she is an will come play for Chester, Champions of Europe....
I'd agree that it's plausible for more established players, but if tomorrow Alex Ferguson offered a contract to some kid in Burton Albion's youth team I find it very hard to believe that he'd say no.
In my experience - and I could be way off the mark here - when somebody you intend to buy whinges about "finding it very hard to leave X" it's usually because they are looking for a better contract. Up his salary or bonuses, see how the little pip-squeak reacts.

Quite often (in 01/02 anyway) they just reject outright, you can't even offer terms. That's the most annoying bit for me.

I wouldn't have turned down 5 grand a week at the age of 15. He can whistle for it.

I thought he wouldn't even discuss terms with you... I find that giving any player a huge sign on bonus normally works but if he won't talk to you....
