Speaking as a Leeds team back in the
Prem and doing well...
One crappy non-league local team as a warm up(cos I'm a romantic at heart and want to give them a nice day), then a lower league local team. Both these two games see ten subs at half-time.
Then go on tour for four games - two smaller teams and then two larger teams, eg, in Spain I may go for Majorca and Getafe (still decent but not Champions) and two bigger teams like Sevilla and Deportivo - allowing most of my players 70 mins each at least. My main screen on here shows the players' fitness, so when they dip below 65% I can sub them.
Then back home where I invite two giants to Elland Road from different countries, eg, Bayern and Lazio. By now I have an inkling of what my best team should be and try to play them for the full 90 mins, again monitoring their fitness.
In League 1 and the Championship I usually had a pile of trialists too, so I'd organise a final friendly a couple of days before the season starts especially for my fringe players and trialists, usually a team from my current league or just below.
Oh, and I increase aerobic training on all training plans, decreasing something else to keep the workload the same. By the time the giants come to visit I have reverted back to normal.
