Default upgrading to improve fm performance

ive decided to upgrade my acer 1640z laptop to improve the speed of fm. its got an intel pentium m 1.7ghz processor (was celeron but acer changed it when it was repaired) and 512meg of ram. if i buy a 1 gig ram module can i use it with the 512 or should i just use new ram, i remember hearing somewhere that all modules should be the same or they wont work.

another question that you might be able to help me with is, the fact that the harddrive has a low rpm, ive considered upgrading to a faster one but ill lose the use of the restore disk (xp setup is in a hidden part of the drive,) could i copy it to a new harddrive. thanks in advance

Go to Crucial for a scan of your system, and this will help with deciding about memory.

Mind you, I suppose most laptop casing is plastic? Perhaps something metal nearby. It's just to ground yourself.
