A topic even more annoying than one moaning about the game...
Yeah, a thread like this will probably seriously irk most people so apologies for this but I'm in need of serious help.
I've been getting the games since 00/01 and I seriously believe that features wise and longevity wise this is undoubtedly the best one yet but (and this will sound totally contradictory) I'm finding it so hard to get into a game right now just because I'm so useless at it!
I've had two games that have got six/seven/eight seasons (1st one I went from Ireland-Coventry-Galway) (2nd one Wexford-St Pats-Limerick) and I've enjoyed doing those games with lesser teams but whenever I try a Premiership game (such as with my fave team West Ham) or a Blue Square South game with my local team, I just do so terrible and am battling relegation despite having a decent team.
Even though I'm aware my uselessness is probably down to my lack of tactical nous, I am not the kind of person who likes receiving tips or hearing about the best players to sign (my own pig-headedness getting in the way of progress!).
So basically I'm looking for some form of inspiration of other people who find the game incredibly difficult but have found a team (any league, any country) who they are able to find success with regardless of sucking at the game or who they are really enjoying managing. Maybe a team with a decent squad and decent transfer funds but low expectations.
I realise I'm in the minority as far as finding this game ridiculously harder than previous FMs and it's actually the first time I've wished there were levels of difficulties on FM.
I'm not looking for something ridiculously easy like winning everything with Man Utd or Chelsea, just a game where I can gradually make progress and have fun without being given loads of tips or it all being plain sailing. I know it's a lot to ask but it's so frustrating for me having what I consider to be the best CM/FM yet but being too sh*t to enjoy it fully!

Check out the Bootroom Fanzine sticky at the top of the page (before issue 2 comes out and replaces it!). There is a team guide for Pompey which should get you started and give you some ideas without being too prescriptive. Should be slightly easier than West Ham, because of the players already there and the finances, but still a challenge to start winning things. Expectation is only to finish top half, which should be easily achievable.

I know how you feel mate. I have tried little teams, big team, and some in between. The frustration level sometimes has me going to work depressed……. How sad is that I ask you
Right now I am managing Bradford in the CC Div 2 and it’s going okay. They have expectations of promotion which is reasonable given they were only just relegated. It’s not easy, but so far it’s going okay. We are 3rd, top 2 get automatic promotion.
I managed to get Man City as a parent club, and they loaned me a keeper and a centre back which has helped. I also have used the loan system to the max, as there isn’t much money around the club.
Not suggesting you take them on, but for me it’s been a nice experience so far.
Good luck with your game, and keep at it, you will crack it eventually. Never lose sight that one good season can easily be followed by heartache (just look at Spurs)
