I have always just wanted a few simple things from this game, to be able to set up the midfield and attackers in a way so that they will form appropriate passing triangles for my attack and defensively getting more then one player to close down in certain areas and then have them moving back to original positions or wear they think suitable. I still have no idea how to do this? for passing triangles should i turn off all forward runs so the players wont try and break the line until we are near their box? but no clue as to how to close down effectively?
cheers peop;e.

Have you, by any chance, coached at the youth level? I ask because that's the kind of notion a youth coach would have - having drummed it into the kids' heads. In FM, it's a little too granular, a level of detail that I think the game assumes is already there for players who are professionals.
If you watch, either on full match or extended highlights, you will see the players forming passing triangles. I find that it's most obvious when attacking on the outside, when you'll see a player without the ball take up a supporting position and another take the role of mobility player.
Turning off all forward runs will serve only to cut down your team's mobility and stifle its attack.

Yes, things will be tense in my house this weekend - my son is, inexplicably, a Man U supporter. I mean, you do your best, try to teach them right from wrong, but they pick this stuff up from their friends. It's the school system, really.

So I asked him, what about a 4-1-2-1-2, in which the wingbacks move up in attack, and as they move up, they form new triangles? He replied, "Oh...well, yeah, if they move up, that's a different story."
"Don't we want them to move up?" I asked.
He didn't call on me for the rest of the session.

Over weeks of watching games on full, my advice is to lower discrepancies between mentality settings between your blocks.
For example, a mentality of 5 for your DCs, 7 for your FBs, 5 for your MCs and 7 for your ML/Rs will create nice little triangles that will generally outplay any forward pressure your opponent tries to apply, and start an attack down either flank.
Something similar would apply if you wished to create more attacking options in the final third, this time your midfielders and wingers coming closer to your strikers, and so on.
I have found that, for testing purposes, a quick tempo play on a very narrow formation is best for instantly revealing which triangles naturally form on your mentality settings. It is easy to work from there to find just the right tempo and width after that.

Oh, and as for forward runs: my current hyposthesis is that where a player starts his run has to do with his mentality. The more aggressive his instructions, the earlier will he start his run.

Evoh, in that case set it to mixed. Wingers are usually smart when to make runs on mixed. Although I have a suspicion that almost everyone will make a short run to apply a through ball or whatever regardless of their settings.
