It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Adjusting players width behaviour

Hi.

I play a 3 midfielder system, all in MC. This is how I want them defending. In possession however, I would like them to go a bit wider (not forward diagonal).

I've tried sarrows, but it seems that that one makes them go wider than I want when out of possession.

How to resolve?

I play a similar system to you except I use only one MC with a winger to the right and left.

The only way I think that you can get them to play a bit wider is to adjust your team tactics and make your width a bit more.

Why don't you try playing a 4 - 1 - 3 - 2 using the system I said above. Set team width to 18 you will tear oppositions defense apart.

Because I don't have good enough wingers to do that properly. Hence I need to use my central midfielders to create more space when in possession, by player slightly wider than the default 3xMC positions.

mmmm ok well I suggest trying to adjust the width bar in team instructions and I also recommend that you go for a couple att midfileders ASAP

Is there no possibility to get a 4132 with 3mc to work?

I have quite decent attacking full backs, who participate forward (while the dmc cover up), and also the attackers go wide (high CF or sarrows) to use that space.

It's worked well in the training matches against reasonable good opposition.

I am just trying to tweak it...

Oh I am not saying that it won't work but I do feel that if teams come at you you are really showing them a lot of space down the wings.

I personaly always play with someone on the wings as I like to play wide football. I hate leaving any space the only place I leave a space is at the
AMC position as I play a striker who will come and collect the ball in that position.

PS what team are you.

I'm Reading, but it's some years out in the game.

I normally like wide attacking football, but I need to do with what I have. I don't have good enough wingers to start. Keeping it open to switch later in the game.

are your MC's good passers?good decisions? if so give them through balls often 2 set to mixed the other set to direct. This will allow them to place the passes to the SC's more accuratly.

Have you considered playing 4-1-3-2 w/ your outside two MCs starting at the ML and MR positions but man marking the opposition's MCr and MCl respectively? That should make them play narrow when you are out of possession but play wider when in position. Not perfect obviously but it might be a work around.

If instruct the MLC and MRC to cross the ball often this should encourage them to take up wide positions more frequently. Along with increasing your teams width slightly 12-14.
