Im not certain but I believe forward runs gurantees that he only makes the runs if he feels it is safe, if he has protection in the back. While a forward arrow says that whenever your team has the ball, he should be in that general vinicity.

What's the difference between foward runs and forward arrows? Post #3
AFAIK farrows/barrows instruct your players where to specifically position themselves depending on whether your team has possession or not. E.g. long farrowed wingers will push right up against the opp. FB's when your team is in possession, so in a 4-4-2 it's like having 4 players up front. Short barrowed MC's will drop back in front of your back 4 when you don't have the ball, offering extra protection to the back line. The way I look at it is an individual instruction is like 'requesting' a player do a certain thing, if he deems the situation appropriate, whereas farrows/barrows 'order' players to move to certain positions on the field irrespective of the risk/reward situation.
Yeah, clear as mud I know. Anyone else?

Arrows mean the player will ALWAYS take up that position.
Forward Runs mean the player will leave his position to move into space in an attack situation.
To be more clear, they get into the box. So let say you give your FB a long arrow without forward run, he will stay in on the edge of the box but not inside.
