in my second season with liverpool and having great success with my 5-3-2 tactic except when i come up against this 4231 formation favoured by milan, barcelona and man u. eg -

ive tried a variety of things when i come up against it but nothing seems to work, i cant win. just lost first leg of semi-final against barca 3-1 and ive got 2nd leg coming up soon so any help would be much appreciated

I play as Valencia in La Liga against Barca and I found that you need a disciplined (i.e. lack of creative freedom in defence and midfield) 4-5-1. But make sure the AMR and AML track back and man mark the AMR and AML (Messi and Ronaldinho) of Barca or whoever it may be.

The DMC should then pick up Deco and mark mark.

So, I have the following positions:

GK, DR, DL, DC, DC, DMC, MC, MC ,AMR, AML, FC

p.s. Make sure that one of the defenders (DCs) man marks the striker and have the other one set to zonal marking to pick up forward runs from either of the two MCs (Xavi or Marquez).

Obviously there's much more to my tactics that this, but these are the main points I can think of that are specific to playing against Barca.

What I've found to be incredibly effective playing as Palermo is:
4-1-3-2, that is
LB CB RB RB
MC
AML AMC AMR
ST ST

When you play stronger opposition, like Milan
But you need to play a DMC as MC, and put him as ultra-defensive, no forward runs, and closing down on max.
He works as a DMC, but still gives you a bit of forward momentum.
Try it, it does work for me anyway
