I've only used the £, but using Euros, US$ or AU$ seem like a good idea to me, i.e. currencies I've used in the past, so I can easily use without having to calculate the value all the time.

I'd draw the line at using Italian Lire, since I'd be bound to miss a zero off a transfer fee, or pay someone 10 times what he's worth.

Forget about calculating the value. You'll learn very quickly what the money is worth without ever calculting how much that is in pounds. You got a wage budget, an average wage bill, a transfer kitty, the values of players, miscellaneous income, etc. What do you care what that's worth in pounds, just don't spend more than you have.
