No, it's not a question about those stupid pre-season bookies' odds. OK, I am relatively new to this part of the board and while recognising some names, I am curious about people's actual playing styles.
So, imagine that you have a conference side in some sort of decent league position. By diligent management or losing a number of players you are well under your wages budget. Let's say, for sake of argument, that you are £1000 below.
Imagine, also, that your terminally incompetent scouts seem to actually have found quite a decent selection of players. Assume here also that all players are mad enough to actually want to come and join you on a free after a trial.
You have three options
(1) A star player for £1000 a week
(2) 2 very important players at £500 a week each
(3) Squad deepening with 4 x £250 players.
In my case, I go for route (1). Even with the grim expectancy that the ****er will get himself injured in training the week after I get him in.
You forgot option (6): sign all the players you are recommended by your scouts, forget the wage cap, and risk the financial security of the club on the chance that your signings will bring you prosperity at a higher level (Lower Leeds Management).
