I've wanted for a long time to create my own tactic, which plays to my teams strengths. My players generally have a high work rate, possess good strength and have good technical skills, i.e. passing and creativity.
The main idea I have is to build attacks from the back with a fair tempo (not too fast to be clumsy) with Mascherano orchestrating things, receiving passes from the back 4 and distributing to the 3 players just in front of him.
I want to make use of my target man Dean Ashton and have instructed the wingers to aim their crosses towards him.
I don't want this to be the only route, I hope that some attacks will have longer passing/crosses towards my target man and some attacks will have short/intricate passing heavily involving my best player Tevez.
I have set closing down to often to the whole team bar Tevez as I want to make it tough for the opposition to have space.
Obviously some players follow the team instructions in some areas and some areas they differ.
I've played 2 pre-season friendlies so far, with a loss and a draw, however it was my best 22 players first game of the season, so I'm hoping performances will improve.
Not having too much knowledge of the ins and outs of good tactics and thinking about my requirements I was hoping you guys could have a quick look and give me some pointers.
Thanks for reading!

The arrows you have make the player go play in that position(not run that direction)so your asking tevez to go play upfront, two wingers as extra forwards, davis playing off 4 forwards and maschereno trying his best to hold midfield and dictate tempo also you have 2 fb playing as wide midfielders! It looks a little too attacking especially against the bigteams.
So play davis as cm forward runs but no arrow, maschereno along side but dropping back to recieve ball(diagonal short arrow) and two wingers just with short arrows forward, also try tevez dropping in the hole which will put him in close range to your midfield as link man.
At the start concentrate on your defence, try not to concede goals, instead of going all gung-ho and this is the way yto start gaining points.
If your wingers cross to targetman he needs someone alongside to pick up knock downs and flick-ons!
Try it for a good 15 games so your players can get used to the system, dont make drastic changes all in one go once you have some momentum and consistency, try to bring in players to fit the system not just good stats, have a look through the palyer forums and try pick up some future stars who will be of benefit there are hundreds of unknown but brill prospects.
Good luck
Ps try free buys in first season, some bargains on loan too.

I'm surprised about what you said about the arrows though, I had no idea that he didn't start off at where the circle is, he actually starts off at the end of his arrow?

The arrows actually represent where the player will move to when you're team are in posession.
i.e. their attackign behaviour, when u lose possesion they will revert to their original circled positions. Although bare in mind it takes time to get to these positions and dependant on their creative freedom they will roam inbetween them a little.
I'd do the following:
-Arrows off the fullbacks, u dont want them to move up just because you're team has the ball somewhere, if u like attackign fulbacks then smply give them more forwards runs and run with ball.
-Mascherano will be quite effect used like that, however I'd put him in the midfeild position with a backwards arrow to DMC instead so he only falls back when the ball is lost.
Think about how uneven you're midfield is going to be at any-point as it is now....
=When in posession Masch will move up, but Davis will be gone (as he moves up too) leaving only Masch in central midfield and off to one side.
=And when you lose the ball Masch will pull back to DMC leaving davies to cover Central Midfeidl but again off to one side.
-Winger arrows generally work great like that, nice.
-Davis run seems pretty pointless to me??
-I use tevez in a simlar fashion quite often, but i play him upfront with a backwards arrow to AMC. However you I've used him with an arrow forward like yours except starting move centrally with some sucess.
just my 2 cence

It still seems attacking but more solid in midfield and defence.
At the moment I have Mascherano set to a mentality of 13, with forward runs set to mixed and holding up ball, do you think that is the best thing to do?

I would recommend you avoid having your centre backs on high closing down. They'll get dragged out of position too much and you'll end up with big gaps in your defence.
Also try to assign creative freedom sparingly. The more creative freedom players have the less they will adhere to your tactical instructions.

-I have both CBs on quite low closing down...one extremly low, that way if the more closing down player misses his target there is often still a DC back there to cope with the on coming attacker (almost like a sweeper).
-You're formation looks alot stronger now. I useually play up the flanks, but thats cos i use Ashton (and Smith) as 'to head' target men, so crosses are all important for me.

I understand what you mean about closing down for DCs. What about the full backs and other positions, what level of closing down should I have for them. I presumed just because my players are generally pretty fast and working to set their closing down to quite high, is that best?

Full backs can be used to close down opposition wingers quite effectively against a basic 4-4-2. Against teams that play the 4-3-3 with the highly positioned wingers, I find that man marking the wide men specifically can pretty much nullify the opposition since the tactic is based around the wingers' success. Only do this though if you feel your full backs match up or they can be burned.
