I've been messing with the slider for individual closing down on central defenders.
Right now i have palleta and carragher in central defense.
when i have closing down high, they get on the ball faster, also get a few more interceptions. However, lack of speed means they get beat with throughballs more often.
if i dont have closing down high enough, they give players enough space to turn and shoot from a reasonable distance.
not quite sure if theres a happy medium here anyone has found, or if you just have to guess and be happy with the result.

i find it best to use low cd on cb but have a dmc in front with high cd to run down oppositions shots...i believe the cb's job should be to mark forwards and as simple as possible |

i dont really understand the tight marking tick box. seems like if closing down was on high.. they'd be tightly marked?

i think tightly marked means the defender tries to stay with the player at all times whereas closing down means the defender will try and get to the player when they recieve the ball...tight marking makes it harder for the striker to escape the defender

at the mo ive just devised a new defensive tactic...ummm, roughly by memory i've conceeded 3 or 4 goals in about 11 or 12 games...2 against man utd and 1 against liverpool though and mostly concede from set plays...went on to win the man utd game 4-2...first season with spurs about halfway through...gk robinson, dc's king, dawson, gardener, hoyte (makeshift cb, been brilliant), davenport, lb assou ekotto (sp), lee young pyo, rb chimbonda, hoyte and stalteri

ummm...i always use zonal marking with tight marked across the back 4, also tight with dmc...in opposition instructions i always instruct tght marking always on good heading forwards, unsure about quick ones i always select tight marking when facing 1 up front but not sure when facing 2 or more...i think its alot better choosing tight marking on zonal as the defender seems to mark the player untill he enters another defenders zone and doesnt get pulled out of position too much...i also instruct close down always and show to weaker foot on wingers and same instructions on any mc with shooting 15+ and tight marking on any midfielder who i class as a real threat ie. gerrard as adviced by my opposition scout ...
ive changed my defensive tactics slightly reading some posts on this forum...its essential to defend/attack as a team and mentality seems the way to do this...i now use a system where each block of players is no more than 2/3 notches above/below the next block of players eg. dc 2, fb 4, dmc 5/6, mc 8/9, mc10/11, amc 12/13, striker 14/15 (can play the amc/striker slightly higher as i deploy more direct passing when defending)...this keeps the center of midfield pretty compact while still having players higher up the pitch for breaks...i always have barrows on fb's and closing down low across defence to keep them in position (cb 2/3 fb 1/2 above that)...also have your wingers on high cd with EASY tackling. this will instruct your winger to hold the player up without diving into tackles, you might not win the ball back but it stops the opponent getting into a good crossing position...i have the d/line on first couple of notches of normal when facing good heading forwards or last couple notches of deep for quick forwards or limiting passes behind the full backs...more attacking mentality i use the same 2 notch mentality theory with mentality about 2 notches more across the pitch...i also have d/line about 1 above halfway to try and win posession...VERY IMPORTANT, HAVE THE KEEPERS MENTALITY 11 WITH CD ABOUT 3/4...this turns the keeper into a makeshift sweeper but low cd limits the chance of getting lobbed, i do have robinson though and high eccentricity or a worse keeper may throw this theory completely out the window or maybe a lower setting may do the trick...width is incredible important...have the width somewhere mixed. if facing a more central formation go more narrow, if balls are played out wide more often go slightly wider...i never go above halfway if i want to be defensive...lastly, time waisting. get higher if you want to defend a lead, i prefer just above halfway around 60/70 mins and often around 80 mins. teams also attack alot more at the end of the 1st half, so the same goes...hope this helps...feel free to ask any questions
