Strange your not having success with it Jamie as, the thing i tried most of all with this tactic is to make it kind of (one size fits all) as i cant be doing with the hassle of everytime i buy a player having to change individual instructions, what results have you lost by and whom have you played?
i only have 2 games left of the season which i'll finish tonight, and i'll post screen shots, so far i've only conceeded 18 goals, and i'm currently on over 100pts, cant remember exactly, i've also instructed my ass man to use the tactic for the reserves, and having checked there top of the league, also conceeded the fewest goals.
The only key points to the tactic that i stick by, is that my FRC is good in the air by that i mean over 185cm's, and the CM with the arrow going backwards is either a DMC or a MC with good tackling and other defensive duties.
Sometimes though tactics need perseverance, as if you lose a couple of games and morale goes low, your defenders start to make stupid mistakes and you are in a losing habit.
One other thing i found was that in January i sold a cuople of my defenders to other clubs as money being offered 'i couldn't turn down especially when i new i could bring in better quality, but even though i brought in better defenders, i started conceeding more goals 1 or 2 a game sometimes, now my back four is settled again though i havent conceeded in 11 games. So try to keep a settled back four as much as possible.
Good luck and i'll post screen shots later.
Ok as promised earlier here are my screen shots showing final league table, reserve league table, and my squad, to show that my team part from maybe Svensson whom i signed in November, is a pretty much average squad, at the end of the season i also went 13 games without conceeding a goal.
Pointon, I am loathe to tempt fate here, but this one is extremely promising. I think you've found a great balance here. Crucially, it appears finally a tactic has been found which actually works defensively!
Okay my story so far is this: After playing for a season and a bit with Newcastle, I was given the boot after being able to use this tactic in only my final game (a victory, ironically). But after 5 defeats from 8 they gave me the chop early doors - quite unfairly, because four of those games were against the big four. So I used the tactic only once vs Charlton, and I won it before being sacked.
After a month or so on the scrapheap, I was offered a job with Stirling Albion, 8th place in the lowly Scottish Division 3 of my home country. This was around December time. Come April, I had won the league with just ONE defeat since I took over. And let me make it clear that the players I had were quite ordinary at best - there wasn't a star amongst them.
This one just seems to 'work' and I was very impressed by the defensive solidarity. I think I went 10 games on the tror without conceding, in spite of the fact that my defenders were average in comparison to the rest of the division. I've noticed a lot of interceptions at the back. And it's worked for me without utilising a big target man too.
So I'm about to embark on my Division 2 quest! I'll post back, but it looks very good indeed pointon - kudos to you Sir.
I have to agree - I am N Forest, and finished 6th last year in the prem - not too bad, but inconsistent play, and too many conceded sunk my chances at a Champions League spot.
My current season, I have played 7, won 6, drawn 1, sitting top of the league, won first UEFA Cup game (7-0 against FC Kobenhvn), and have just thumped Arsenal 5-1).
Top tactic, my draw was against Liverpool, who seem to be the form side this season, and are below me on points.
Very promising, and very tight at the back, without sacrificing attacking ability.
Well done.
