This has always confused me a little, so I have two theroies:
a) The player is a forward centre. He is most adept as playing up front as a lone forward, so would be useful for defensive play.
b) The player is a hybrid between an AM and ST. He shares the creative qualities of an AM, but the finishing/anticipation/off the ball of an ST. These normally play in the 'hole' so to speak, like Rooney etc.
Which one of these is the closest definition? Thanks.

i'm pretty sure its to do with free role as benoit2 says. Out of intrest is free role related to creativity or decisions or both. As with players outside of the striking positions its impossible to tell how good they are in a free role situation it would be nice if we could ask a coach how good player X is at free role as depending on his judging ability he would be able to accurately tell you or it would be added to the positions screen.

In wwfan's RoT world, where he refers to a FCa and a FCd, I think of the former being the striker and the latter being the forward.
for me a good player is one with good overall stats, like 15 for everything. this is because i can use him in any situation that i face. for example, a striker who is great at anticipating and scoring etc, but bad workrate, strength etc, gets you the goal, but all of a sudden in the second half u just have to defend. he just cant chase the ball or hold it up to bring up other players. he's just one-dimension. then you just have to sub him and waste that one sub.
so i think an FC allows u more option than a straight out striker who just waits and cant tackle. he would probably have good stats for a creative role, or a explosive kind but can hold up play as well.
Probably SC and FC just come from different terms, one more formal than the other. It is like wingers who, in a more formal term would be more associated with midfield right or midfield left instead of wingers.
By the way, does anyone know where I could get the really old school term for player positions? You know, center half etc etc.
