Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Basic training question, with possibly ambiguous answer

I remember in CM 03/04 you had the choice to train players for attacking set pieces and defending set pieces, rather than actually taking them (sort of like the tactical side of set pieces).

What is the case in FM 07? It doesn't seem to matter anymore if your entire team doesn't take part in set piece training. I've got the impression that you should only use set piece training on your specialist and your wingers (for crossing).

Does perhaps training players in 'Defending' help with defending set pieces?

Thanks

Set Piece training afeects :
Crossing, Corners, Free Kicks, Penalties and Long throws so IMO is important- what % of goals in real life are scored from set pieces?- you decide.

Tactics and Defending. IIRC without having the game on, it's one of these two which has off the ball and positioning. Positioning is basically the stat which governs what the player does off the ball when the team isn't in possession, so that'd be helpful for defending free-kicks.

Then you have his marking, which is important for set-pieces, under defending.

It was great in CM 03/04 because you could use the same training element in different player's schedules, such as crossing for example. Obviously crossing is essential for wide players, full backs, wing backs and strike partners when they get to the byline, but in CM 03/04 it could also be used in training schedules that at first glance would appear to be out of place.

For example, by adding crossing training into a goalkeeper's schedule, this would encourage an improvement in the GKs jumping, aerial ability, handling (catching), punching, command of the area etc etc. This was because the GK would be on the receiving end of the crosses, and hence would be using some of the mentioned attributes more regularly than he would do if no crossing training was included in his schedule.

The depth of the training allowed you to train various members of the squad simultaneously at set times during the week, such as the whole squad undertaking a training match, cross country in pre-season, or even penatly practice for example.

As already mentioned, since defending and tactics cover some important attributes in FM2007, these should be incorporated into your schedules.

Thanks very much for the responses all. Very helpful.

Have to say that the training has really been dumbed down since CM 03/04 which is great, but now to improve centre backs heading, i have to work on technique and dribbling too. Kind of annoying, but i'll survive
