after reading through some threads about tactics it got me thinking, could you play a short and slow passing game with a counter attacking side to it or does this sort of contradict one another, any comments would be appreciated

It does work, especially towards the end of the match, but never ever use counter attack with short passing. I tend to play it with mixed passing and it works like a charm.

I use counter attacking all the time. Fast, direct or slow, short.
My team's mentality is 12 at it's highest, but generally 10 and all the front 6 players (i.e DMC and forward) are on team mentality.
2nd in the league season 1 with Newcastle, won the league second season. Had to sell Owen, Dyer and N'Zogbia to free up cash to buy a new defence, but my highest signing was £5m.
I only say that to suggest that it's not only a top, top team that can compete using it. I beat all the big sides at their place last season, mainly from breakaway goals.

It could work if you split the defensive players and attacking players passing. So a direct ball straight to the AM's then some intricate, fast passing to split up the few defenders who're at the back.
Best to do a Mourinho with set-pieces (back from the Porto days), leaving 3 up so it's effective, and means your opposition is either exploited at the back, or to cover it has less players up for the corner (as defenders are good headerers of the ball).

It could work. Counter attack sends the ball to the striker once you win back possesion. Problem is the striker might lose the ball before the support arrives. If you can prevent this then it would be a good tactic. Probably a quality striker on the ball would do.
