It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default FM08 Setup set pieces

Hi everyone

I wondered if others had the same problem as me. The main problem for my current tactic (442 diamond) are that I am conceding most goals from set pieces. Penalty, corners and free kicks... I have lost and drawed few games where I dominated but lost points since the opposition put one or two goals in from set pieces.

My question is, do there exist a current thread discussing set pieces in FM version 8.01? I like to get some inspiration on how to defend and setup for attacking set pieces.

Main concerns are corners and then free kicks. I define a goal from corner and free kick as if the goal came from the set piece until my team can take possesion with 2 or more passes. There are many goals that get created by a corner after some box play or a desperate attempt to clear the ball. I do count these goals as set piece goals too since my defense organisation still are in "defending set piece".

I do also create too few goals from corners than I like. I do have enormous success with goals from direct free kicks. So far I think my set piece taker have scored 8-10 in 17-25 games. I also like some help or atleast discuss needed attributes for different set piece setup.

Cheers

I have exactly the same problem. Especially I lack scoring from corners, eventhough I have good players in air. Opponent however is always a threat there.

I score a lot from freekicks...as does my opponent.

Good setup for your corners - pick two good headers and put on near post flick on and challenge GK. Pick one player with decent heading / finishing and stand on far post. Put one player with good finishing to attack near post and two players with decent long shots to outside area & attack from deep. Put your two fullbacks to stay back all the time just in case of a break away counter attack and in the team instructions aim your corners at the near post. Your near post flick on man will weigh in with a good few goals - currently I am top of the divisional chart for goals from corners.
When defending corners have both fullbacks on both posts and your best header on mark tall player. You should go through your team looking for decent defensive stats and place them on man marking with one marking the short player. Place one person on short blocking off and leave one midfielder and one forward up front for any breakaways.
When defending freekicks have both fullbacks on both posts, both central defenders to man mark and the rest to form a wall with one midfielder and forward up front again.
When taking freekicks I tend to have one man challenge GK, two interfere in the wall, one stand with the taker and the rest forward or back as you see fit. I also aim freekicks in team instructions at the best header.
As a final thing are you managing to score any penalties - I can't score any!!!

Barnsley - Thanks mate. I have taken your attacking corner setup and played few games. I had something similar, but with the small changes from your advice it seems to work better. 2 goals from corner in 3 games so far

About the penalty setup I have several players with about 11-14 in penalty, but I don't think I missed a penalty yet.

I guess you want to look for players with some good mentally skills as well a high penalty skill. I would think that composure and influence affect the penalty taking as important as the penalty skill.
There are several hidden stats which can be influence the players ability to take penalty. I guess something about handling pressure, handling pressure from important matches. So, I usually test the takers and switch if someone miss more than 50% of his penalties.

On the attacking corner setup you could try 6 yard box on one side and near post on the other. Are you running pre or post beta 8.0.1. patch - I was not running the pre patch so I cannot comment on how the penalties were then. Playing as Man Utd I have lost the Charity Shield on penalties and failed to score one!!! What main attributes do you look at?

Thanks Lawman - will give it a try as this is spoiling the game but could be due to a bug.

In order to receive less goals of set pieces take in count these things:

1.Don't let your defences to be aggresive when tackling. You will concede less penalties and free kicks near the area. have a hard MC or DMC could help, since he won't let players arrive far.

2.have players with good jumping, and if possible good heading. even if they are strikers, make them mark tall rivals when they are taking a corner or free kick.

3.Keep in mind your keeper. maybe he is good in one of ones, but bad at aerial ability or short kicks from rebounds.
