Don´t curse me for cheating because I am not! I have saved the game after the first result but I just wanted to check the game again and now I have checked it so many times I have lost count.
Playing Nigeria in the 2010 World Cup. Won against Serbia with 5-2, Croatia with 6-1 and Saudi Arabia with 11-1 in the group.
Moved on to face England and lost with 3-0. Saved and reloaded the previuos game to test. What ever I do I loose! And ain´t with small numbers either, usually with 3 or 4 to zero. The biggest loss I suffered is with 6-0.
Have tried the same formation over and over again, tried other formations. Tried different prematch approaches with alternating comments to the team and to indivdual players.
Can say now that I have the latest days been obssecing (?) with this game so I am now clocking up on my 23 or 24 match!! Pathetic, I know!
I have not even scored one goal this matches even that I in several of them have won the "shot´s against goal" with, in some times, England 12 Nigeria 24.
My players run with the ball and, somehow just during this match, stops witht the ball and an English player just runs them over and snaps the ball. No English player behaves in this way.
Why do You post this thread You ask? Well, one possibiliy is to show what a sad person I am or I am just curious if the match engine is biased in some way?
It would be quite interesting to see if anyone else could get a result in these circumstances. Would it be possible to provide the save game so people could have a go?
Well, I've done the same thing on FM2007 (again not cheating, I wanted to learn how the match engine works...). I was playing England vs. France in the World Cup quarter finals. Basically I lost the game with England 18 times in a row, before finally winning the match. What I found out in the first few games was that the pace of the French strikers was what was causing me problems, so I moved the defensive line back and put in central defenders with +16 pace. I still lost the next many matches, each time because of individual mistakes (own goals a few times, defenders not marking their man, goalkeeper playing the ball directly to an opposing striker, my striker trying to lay the ball back to the GK resulting in a one-on-one with a French striker), which left me with the option of looking at team talks really...
What I found out in my last 4-5 "rematches", was that the team talk option that I had chosen led my players to making a lot of mistakes and not really performing in the way that their ability ought to justify. I do find it a bit unrealistic that my pre-match team talk could have such a big impact as to make your players not being able to pass the ball properly, but there you are.
My guess is that the importance of the team talks might have been put up a bit too much for "important matches" and thus making it a bit too obvious if you haven't chosen the exact right team-talk, for big games at for example the World Cup.
Yeah, you're right Dafuge, it would be interesting to let people have a go with the save game. What I wrote above was pertaining to FM2007 so things might be very different at this time. Also other factors of course come into this, such as morale and previous matches for the different squads.
