It's a lot easier than many think, you just need to take time and be patient.

Yea and all you need is a staring block which you improve on each game until you are winning games without making anymore changes that way you know you have the tactic for that season.
I feel I have the best starting block but that is in my opinion so let me know if you want it and I will tell you.

ok lets give it a try then.
I play a 4-1-3-2 tactic. The 3 midfielders are not tight to gether I have one central midfileder and a right winger and a left wiger. These wingers have farrows on them also but only half way up the pitch.
Now first thing is first the player instructions. If you highlight your GK, DC etc to the top right hand corener of the screen there is an option to set your player instructions to a pre determined tactic. So I do the below.
GK - Goalkeeper
DR - Wing Back
DL - Wing Back
DC - Centre Defender
DC - Centre Defender
DMC- DMC
MC - Att Midfielder
MR - Winger
ML - Winger
SC - Striker
SC - Striker
Ok now we have the basis we now need to choose our forward runs, run with ball cross ball etc for each player. Now do do this depends on the player himself.
For your DC set all the insturctions to rarley you do not want them takin risks.
Now for the rest of your playes check their attributes for example. For your DR if he has 14-15 for Pace and Accelleration I would give him Forward Runs Mixed anything above 15 I would give him Often. Now this is the same for all the other options.
Forward Runs - (As above) Choose Mixed if Pace + Acceleration is 14-15 and often if above 15
Run with ball - Choose Mixed if dribbling is 14-15 and often if above 15
Long Shots - Choose Mixed if Long Shots is 14-15 and often if above 15
Through Balls - Choose Mixed if Passing is 14-15 and often if above 15
Cross Ball - Choose Mixed if Crossing is 14-15 and often if above 15
Now before each game you must ready the Scout Report and I mean you MUST read it. Im not going into detail on how to counter the opposition I will leave that aspect up to you but I will help if you need it. But if the team you are going to play is likely to play defensive you need to change to more attacking in your TEAM INSTRUCTIONS not you player instructions. You may also chosse to play wider and a more direct passing game but this is all down to how the opposition will play which you will get from the scout report.
Also take note of danger players and in game make sure to close him down always and choose to make him go on his weeker foot.
I tend to play wide always but this is my choice.
Now at the end of each game check how your stats were for passes attempted and passes cmpltd etc if you notice for example your MC tried 50 pases and only completed say 25 you know that in his player instructions his passing may not suit him so you can alter his slider for passing. This is something you will have to do as every player is different. this is also the same for tackling etc just increase tackling to eaither light, Medium hard you know how it is.
Now I will leave at this and as you can see I have typed this in a hurry as I am at work but I do not mind receiving any questions so keep them coming.

Also I forgot to mention that when I fell comfortable about my tactics I tend to start the game the way I like then change during the game depending on how the computer is coming at me.
This way I give them something worrie about but there are times even with the smaller teams that they get in about me so I do have to alter my Team Instructions to counter them.

Very good post Morphiushell.
It takes time and common sense to prevail, as you've demonstrated. Freindly games are ideal for highlighting problems and rectifying them.

It does take you are correct but i would not try changeing things during friendlies as your players do not try as much and nor does the opposition.
Play your plays as normal as you can in friedndlies and let them use there own abilites that way you can asses the exact quality of your team.

i tried making my own endless nights,..nothing..the only way to be a champion is one..to have the most expensive 22 players in the world! and the other major teams with 6-7 injuries..fm07 is too hard, too complex the magic of the game is lost..i am ready to throw the cd
| The old cliche is true here... Knowledge is power... make an effort to read some of the tactics bible threads and educate yourself thoroughly on how the game works, what sliders complement each other and what theories are universally accepted as solid.
Once you have a strong foundation of knowledge to fall back upon you will be able to build a preliminary tactic that you can tweak and finetune until you are getting the results that have until now eluded you. I play with sides that don't have the best 22 players in the world and i consistantly do well... which refutes your claim about the game being to hard.
