It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Target Man

How many of you use a target man in your tactics? what are the benefits, and is there a downside? also, what position makes for the best target men?

thanks.

In my opinion the best position would be a second striker with a lower mentality than his strike partner. Depending on your formation, the sole striker would be decent or perhaps an AMC with high mentality.

If I use a target man I'd want him to have excellent jumping and strength stats. This could be used to great effect in the lower leagues, though I cannot claim to have tested that.

The down sides are that your play can be very one dimensional and a good centreback can completely nullify him. However, when playing counter-attacking football or when the underdogs it's a useful tool in getting the ball out of defence quickly to a big tall guy who can hold it up or flick it on to other players.

I'm sure other players will have different opinions though.

Normally a striker with great Strength, Jumping and Heading can be a GREAT target man.

And always good to have one target man partner with a little pacey striker imo.

I just had some good success using a fast target man and used the Run onto Ball as the passing strategy for the target man. Worked well with a Direct passing style.
