According to SI, a player will follow team instructions unless he has an individual instruction ticked. That means individual instructions, not only mentalities, will override team instructions when enabled.
There's only one situation where, to make things easier on the player (us), team mentality will override individual ones: when it's set to the most defending position (1), or to the most attacking position (20).
Some people disagree, because the manual mentions that mentality has different effects "individually". I believe that's just bad wording, and what they meant was to discern the overall collective play effects from the strictly individual ones.

thats applys only for the instructions that can be ticked, so it doesn't apply for mentality becuase it can't be ticked
