I agree, Liverpool and Cherry Coke don't mix. Nevertheless, apart from that...unless you have any afflictions towards those things which may bias your views regarding taking his advice, its pretty sound!!

You have other resources as well. I don't think it would be cheating to read your local paper, and see who they rave about. I'm sure RL managers do that as well.

I was going to suggest Online teamsites as well but that would probably be on par with searching the Good players guide here! Strictly against ethos!

For me the local paper is a no-no.
It's too much like going for known players.

For me the okay sources to add players to your shortlist:
- Scouting
- Players who are mentioned in the (CM!) news
- Opposition players who are doing well against you
- Looking at the ranking lists of your league for players with most goals/less conceded/best rating since those rankings do exist in RL for practicly every league


Besides that: browsing the local paper wouldn't help me a tiny bit since I'm playing with the random players option...

.. and playing at the moment in the year 2016..
