It would be "realistic" to just play one game per week and watch it in full match mode for 90 minutes, but as it's a game I like my season's to run a little faster than that!
I have been known to watch the occasional match in full match mode - usually a tough away cup match or somesuch where I'm looking to close the game down for 0-0 (yeah, I can't be bothered watching games were I'm hoping for goals - 0-0's are much better :p), but in general key highlights will do for me.
It's a game. It's simulation of real life, not real life. LLM and realism go together, but not to the extent of watching a full match. There's a line in simulation realism, and this goes over it.
I'd say it was best to switch between 'extended' and 'full match'. Start on full match, and watch the first 5-10 mins, the most important part of any football match as far as the team's preset tactics are concerned. If you're happy, switch to extended. If not, tamper and watch a bit more. There's no need to watch the entire thing, provided that the computer tells you when the AI makes changes, or you can spot them.
Alternatively, as the match engine doesn't really look like football at all, play it in commentary only and trust that the match engine does a good job.

Something the computer fails to do most of the time.
But regardless, I generally stick with my chosen formation for the duration of the match, tweaking it according to match progress.

Good point, the computer should tell you when it makes changes. Why doesn't it tell you every time? Sometimes you get 'Scunthorpe are changing to a 4-2-4' or 'reverting to a normal style' and sometimes you just happen to notice the 2 extra forwards running amok and deduce the change. Shoddy.
